| Truckers to toot their own horn Truckers to toot their own horn 2/11/08 Hutchinson Leader, MN Quote:
Hutchinson City Council members could find it more difficult to unload the issue of trucks parking in residential areas when they meet Tuesday night, Feb. 12.
The council voted last month to have police enforce the city’s existing prohibition against the parking of commercial trucking weighing more than 9,000 pounds gross weight in residential areas, even if it is on private property, such as a driveway.
Police have stepped up enforcement, but truckers have yet to be heard on the issue and apparently are planning to use the council’s open microphone period at the start of the meeting to air their views.
Truckers feel they are being unfairly targeted. The closing of the 7 West Truck Stop a few years ago means they have limited options for parking. In warmer months, several have parked in various commercial and industrial lots around Hutchinson, including Hutchinson Co-op’s Fifth Avenue Southeast elevator. But those do not have electricity necessary for winter parking.
The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. in the council chamber of City Center, 111 Hassan St. S.E.
