Female ice cream truck driver killed by Henderson police

Female ice cream truck driver killed by Henderson police
2/13/08
Quote:
LAS VEGAS — Henderson police say officers trying to issue a speeding ticket shot and killed a 42-year-old woman who they say took a knife from her ice cream truck and made threatening moves.

The woman has been identified as Deshira Selimaj. She died at St. Rose-Siena hospital after the Tuesday afternoon shooting near Sunridge Heights and Pecos Ridge parkways.

Police spokesman Todd Rasmussen says a confrontation ensued after the woman’s husband, 65-year-old Zyber Selimaj, was stopped in another ice cream truck.

The woman arrived with her 7- and 11-year-old sons, and police say she wielded a knife and at one point used one of the children as a shield.

Police tried to stun the woman with a Taser but failed. When she made an aggressive move, an officer shot her.

The husband was arrested and is in the Henderson city jail.

The children are at Child Haven.

The officer has been put on paid administrative leave while department officials investigate.

WOW, those poor kids. I wonder if there was a better way of controlling this situation instead of shooting these kids mother in front of them?

Look at it from the cop's perspective. He pulls over a vehicle, a separate vehicle stops, the woman gets out with a knife and threatens him. He's already outnumbered here, and has no idea what the intentions are of these people. Then the woman used her own child as a shield?!? What kind of a mother does that. He tried a non-lethal taser first, but that wasn't enough. If it comes down to him or her, better her. It is the children who are the innocent victims here.

What Really Happened?

If this kind of story is NEW to you, well most of us stay busy and don't check the right news websites to know what's really going on these days. In fact, the police 'cover' for one another. They lie under oath. Only the children know what really happened. Now they're at "Child Haven," they will be drugged up and evaluated as totally unfit, so their testimony will be deemed worthless. As for their father, the driver of the ice cream truck, they will threaten him to keep quiet or they'll throw the book at him. Since, from his name, he may be of immigrant extraction, he will obey. He thought he was taking his family to a better life, in the land of the free and the home of the brave. Right. That was in the past. Now it is a police state.

Ya, thats right.
Cops ALWAYS "cover" for each other and lie under oath....
and trucking companies are out to screw every driver too.
Come to think about it....the theory of explosives in the WTC is starting to look real as well.

Anyone seen my tin-foil hat?

Why not put the blame directly WHERE it belongs?
Instead of turning the woman into the victim here, remember that she threatened the cops with a knife. SHE used her children as a shield. That was a conscience choice on HER part. Don't give me any of that liberal blubber about "those poor kids", because she obviously wasn't thinking about their welfare when she was hiding behind them. Hell, the cops probably did them a favor.

I feel very bad for those poor kids but I do wonder if he really HAD to shoot to kill? It was knife and I'm sure he could have had backup there very quickly. Was the husband helping the wife threatening the police? That would make it MUCH more dangerous for the officer.

I mean, aren't officers trained to take down suspects wielding knives without shooting and killing them?

It's a very unfortunate situation and we weren't there. If I had a gun in my hand I was allowed to use and someone threatened me with a knife and knew what they were doing and had another adult there to help, who knows???

Why the woman came up and stopped at all with her kids in the car was foolish and stupid. The biggest loser here are the kids, unfortunately.

He did try the non-lethal way first, he tried the taser and it didn't stop her.

I realize police are taught to shoot to kill
But maybe a bullet to the leg would have worked just fine
