Truckers Avoid Weigh Stations By 'Dodging The Scales'

Truckers Avoid Weigh Stations By 'Dodging The Scales'
2/18/08
KXAN-TV, TX
Quote:
Hundreds of thousands of truckers are on Texas roads with you every day. One of the ways our state helps ensure your safety is by mandating stops at weigh stations.

KXAN Austin News has uncovered a legal loophole, allowing some drivers to skate through under the radar. In trucker lingo, it's called "dodging the scales."

There are 76 permanent weigh stations operated by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The state makes truckers stop at those weigh stations, among other things, to make sure their loads are not too heavy, check their brakes and wheels, and make sure truck drivers are getting enough sleep on the roads, things that could put you at risk.
Failing to stop at any weigh station by disobeying a weigh station signal is illegal. The shortcut that saves truckers time and money is called "dodging the scales" by taking a detour. Currently, there is no law in Texas that makes it illegal to take a detour around a weigh station by taking another route.

Thats about the only good thing about Texas then. They'll get a chance to check you out anyway when they stop you for"having to many lights on your trailer".

Dumptruck scales

its not only happening in texas, but all over. the new laws and hours of service did nothing , but cost us all money. dodging the scales ??? hummmmm ! i did that myself in my time, butttttt i soon found out its not worth it. I just plan take the load back to shipper and make them adjust, or screw them. for todays pay rates?????? it isnt worth the hassle.

I used to "run" the scales every chance I got as long as it wasn't to far out of route. I was allways of the opinion that the truck cops were more interested in separating me from my "green stamps" than they were about truck safety.

Operative wording, to sell a news story to the public.

By that math, I guess I can say, from time to time, I will dodge toll roads.

Dodging the scales can be costly. I have dodged the w/s but not because I was heavy but because I really didn't know where it was at.
I was in CO when a driver dodged the scales, DOT when after the person, gave him a ticket for not only for dodging the scale but did a inspection on the rig and put him oos. So I personally, feel it is better to stop then to dodge. Save a few green stamps.

BTW cool truck avatar

I'm shocked to hear about this. Imagine someone not driving out of route to get weighed?? Maybe they could put a scale on every road? That way they'd be creating jobs.

Having lived in Austin for a few years, the primary reason trucks jump off at San Marcos and head north is to avoid the stinking cluster**** called I-35 in Austin. Also keep in mind Austin is one of the more, ummmmm, liberal cities in Texas and KXAN will jump at anything that appears to be harming something.
