Scofflaw truckers are getting heavy fines

Scofflaw truckers are getting heavy fines

3/14/08
Ridgefield Press, USA
Quote:
The word may be getting out among truckers to watch out for the Ridgefield Police. And one officer in particular.

Violations on just four trucks passing through town recently — one hauling a huge boat — resulted in nearly $10,000 in fines.

Many others have been nailed for lesser infractions and fines this year.

From the four stops, Officer Chris Swan wrote citations for violations including overweight vehicles, unsecured and wide loads, defective tires and windshields. The fines for those four stops — all in February — came to $9,726.

“The majority goes to the state,” Police Chief Richard Ligi said of the revenue from the fines.

The chief told the Police Commission about the truck violations at its February meeting.so

Overweight trucks tear up the roads, said Commissioner George Kane said.

More than half the fines were levied as the result of one stop on Route 7, about 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7.

Public Information Officer Captain Stephen Brown provided details:

“...Officer Dardis observed a large boat being towed on Route 7. He alerted Officer Swan who escorted the vehicle and trailer to the Connecticut Department of Transportation weigh station.

“The vehicle was overweight, had a defective tire, and the driver was off his permitted route. Total fines, $5,065.”

Other major stops made during February resulted in fines totaling:
  • $1,813 for an overweight truck with a defective windshield and a crowded front seat;
  • $1,738 for overweight vehicle and load, and failure to carry registration;
  • $1,110 for a wide load, defective tires, and failure to carry registration.
During a five-day crack-down on truck safety violations last fall Officer Swan worked with a state police inspection team that netted 88 violators. A number of tickets have been written in the past week or two.

The department is trying to arrange for Officer Swan attend the North American Standard Truck Inspection Program, which would give him federal inspection certification — the same training and credentials state police troopers receive.

“I’m hoping to get him into school to be a little better trained,” Chief Ligi told the commission. </SPAN>

I would make the cop show me in the law book that this is actually a law, not him just pulling some thing out of his butt.

The time to "Make them show you the law" is in court, not on side of the road.

There are laws on the books that will make you say "What the !##% (Heck) "......

Even with the laws "On the books" it is up to the District Atty. to decide IF they will prosicute them.

Demanding to be shown the statute or law on the side of the road is a BAD move. IF the Cop has done his/her research on the "Odd/obscure laws" you may find yourself with a LOT of other charges that ARE valid, just not commonly used. When the P.O.P. syndrome (Pizzed off Police) kicks in YOU will lose a lot more times than you win.
