Trucking firm pursues rezoning

Trucking firm pursues rezoning

VALPARAISO -- A trucking business located on rural U.S. 6 will go before the Porter County commissioners April 15 for a possible rezoning that could allow it to expand.

However, the Porter County Plan Commission has already recommended that the land at 101 W. U.S. 6 not be rezoned from rural residential to high intensity commercial so that the business can expand into trailer sales.

The Plan Commission members voted unanimously against the rezoning that Maro Allen Sr. and Maro Allen Jr. of Allen's Square Inc. requested at the Wednesday meeting.

The younger Allen said they will wait to see how the commissioners vote before deciding what to do next, although their attorney Chuck Lukmann said there is always the Porter County Board of Zoning Appeals.
The Allens presented plans for the land that included retaining the woods behind the business.
The trailer sales would take place in a building in the back of the property, and although they would have stock on hand, most of the sales are done by phone or Internet with the trailer manufacturers delivering the finished products to the buyers' businesses.
