Somerset County-based truck drivers who haul shipments to the south, east and west find that convenience, safety and affordability are often missing from their daily routes.
But those qualities would become part of their routines if a four-lane Route 219 was built.
“Route 219 would save aggravation and wear and tear on the truck and the driver,” said Carl Cotter Jr. of Cotter and Sons Milk Transport Inc. of Berlin. He started his family owned trucking business 52 years ago.
“We have been looking forward to the completion of 219 for a long, long time,” he said.
State officials decided to build Route 219 in 1957. The Meyersdale bypass was completed in 1998. Last year, environmental clearances were received for the project’s next phase — a four-lane highway between Meyersdale and Somerset.
But in February, commissioners learned that the state funding had been removed from the 2009 state transportation draft budget. The commissioners were counting on using that money as a match to obtain $45.8 million in federal funds.
