Bill seeking English requirement for CDL applicants dies

New Hampshire bill seeking English requirement for CDL applicants dies
4/8/08
Quote:
A bill in the New Hampshire Senate died that sought to make it clear that aspiring truck drivers have a firm grasp of the English language before they obtain licenses to drive.
Federal rules require people who take tests to receive their commercial driver’s licenses to be able to read and speak English well enough to read road signs, prepare reports, and communicate with the public and with law enforcement.

Sen. John Barnes Jr., R-Raymond, introduced the bill – SB388 – to add those same requirements to state law. But the Senate Transportation and Interstate Cooperation Committee ruled it was “inexpedient to legislate,” effectively killing it for the year.
New Hampshire isn’t alone in pursuit of rules intended to make sure trucker-hopefuls can communicate in English. Similar efforts have been brought before lawmakers in statehouses that include Missouri, Ohio, South Carolina and Virginia.

Supporters say restrictions are needed in states to help ensure that aspiring truckers and other drivers have a firm grasp of the English language before they obtain their license to drive. They also offer reminders about the federal rules.

Opponents say there are no studies that suggest English proficiency makes better drivers. Others say there are more pressing issues to address in the state.
The New Hampshire bill can be reintroduced during the 2009 regular session.

I would support this- it is a basic knowledge relating to passing on information, traffic safety, road signs, and even maintaining customers. But, I doubt that this would ever pass anyway- politicians are more concerned with maintaining and not angering a constituency that is growing instead of the country's greater good and safety.

Urge your Congressman to co-sponsor H.R. 5971!

Did you know that local jurisdictions in 31 states are being forced to print ballots in languages other than English, even though English is required for naturalization?
U.S. Congressman Dean Heller (R-NV) wants to stop this. But he needs your help to succeed.
He has introduced The American Elections Act, H.R. 5971, to specify that ballots for federal elections can be printed ONLY IN ENGLISH, except in jurisdictions where translations of Native American or Alaska Native dialects are provided under current law.
H.R. 5971 is vital to restoring linguistic unity in our federal election system, and stopping the division of our country by language. Nearly 50 years ago, Congress first allowed Spanish language ballots to be provided for naturalized, American-educated Puerto Rican citizens. Since then, the federal mandate to print ballots in other languages has grown to include 292 counties and numerous foreign languages. Unless something is done, those numbers will grow.
According to an August 2007 poll, 74 percent of voters agree that “All election ballots and other government documents should be printed in English.” This should not be happening. To vote you must be a citizen. And if you aren’t born in the United States , you have to pass an English test to become a citizen. So why does the federal government force counties, states, and cities to print ballots in other languages?
TAKE ACTION
Urge your congressman to co-sponsor The American Elections Act, H.R. 5971.

Thank you!

Nothing less then a socialist decision.. This just makes me sick that the people we pay to make the right decisions, that being what American tax payers want, just keep on doing just the opposite to please foreign countries... I am tired of pleasing foreign countries and tires of Washington and their BS decision making.....

The people who have made the decision are bought and paid for buy business. They use freedom and the constitution to support their move. The purpose of this is to attack the wages of Americans and provide cheap labor to business. These people are the enenmies of the citizens of the United States.

I am just sick of this and so is everybody I run into, friends and neighbors, including Mormans, and Jahovas Witness's, just about everybody.

They tell me they spent over 5-6 years to get a Visa and learned to speak English so can everybody else.. They are sick of their jobs being taken (ones who came here legally) and them not having to put any effort into getting here, other then swimming...

Agreed.

When we discuss this problem I take it for granted that we understand this. There are AMERICANS that are of hispanic decent that don't like what's going on also.

Also, what we are experiancing is not just a Mexican Invasion but an invasion by many third world people; with the help of our own government. Mexican's are just able to invade much easier.
