| Diesel’s cost felt in stores Diesel’s cost felt in stores 4/13/07 Kane County Chronicle, IL Quote:
Maria Valencia expects her business to double very soon.
And that prospect, while exciting, leaves her a little worried.
For the past decade, Valencia, of Aurora, has run Valencia Trucking, a small, two-truck operation in Addison that specializes in the delivery of furniture for a retail furniture chain.
But that retailer has told Valencia that it intends to open a new store very soon, potentially doubling the work for Valencia’s business.
Although she welcomes the opportunity, Valencia said she worried about how much of her margin literally could go up in smoke if the price of diesel fuel continues to rise.
“I know how much I’m spending to drive the two trucks now,” Valencia said. “I can just imagine what it’s going to be if diesel keeps costing this much.”
In recent weeks, the price of diesel fuel has spiked, reaching record highs.
Friday, the price of a gallon of diesel in the Chicago market stood at an all-time record of $4.269, according to the AAA Motor Club daily fuel price report.
The price had been $4.042 a gallon a month ago, and it was $3.042 a year ago, the report said.
Nationally, the average price of diesel fuel stood at $4.066 a gallon Friday, compared with $2.913 at this time last year.
And those costs have begun to exact a toll, say those whose businesses rely on diesel.
Faced with declining earnings, UPS, FedEx and other shippers have slapped surcharges from 6 to 20 percent on the cost of goods shipped to offset some of the fuel cost increases. http://www.kcchronicle.com/articles/...3624897924.txt | |
