| Trucking thieves get big Wii haul at truck stop Trucking thieves get big Wii haul at truck stop
4/17/08 The Courier News, IL Quote:
HAMPSHIRE -- Someone broke into at least six semitrailer trucks parked at the TravelCenters of America (TA) truck stop last weekend, police reported Wednesday. But only one truck, whose driver headed off again in the morning without noticing, is known to have sustained a major loss.
TA and two other nearby truck stops along U.S. 20, near where it intersects with Interstate 90, are frequent overnight rest stops for truck drivers traveling the tollway. Police said five drivers complained Sunday morning that during the previous night someone had broken into their trailers, which held items such as sinks, furniture and rolls of paper. Some drivers told police nothing was missing. Others said they could not tell for sure until they reached their destinations.
But under one of those trailers, an investigating officer said he found empty boxes which had contained 72 Nintendo Wii games. They were addressed to a discount toy store in Joliet. Police said they determined the boxes had been aboard a truck whose driver, Christopher W. Knight of Tonganosse, Kan., already had left for Joliet. Summoned back to Hampshire, Knight estimated the loss at $28,000.
Police examining his truck said they found a bloodstain on its rear door which eventually could tie the crime to a suspect via DNA testing. This was the third recent report of break-ins at the Hampshire truck stops. Between March 29 and 30 someone cut open the seals on four trailers at TA, stealing several boxes of potato chips and possibly other merchandise. In the next few days, someone entered three more truck cabs at the nearby Arrowhead Citgo, stealing a radio faceplate and a driver's logbook. http://www.suburbanchicagonews.com/c...MIS_S1.article | |
