Collect DNA from every person they arrest

Feds change policy, will now collect DNA from every person they arrest
4/17/08
Quote:
The federal government will begin collecting DNA samples from every person arrested, a Justice Department spokesman reportedly confirmed on Wednesday, April 16.

Anyone arrested and any foreigner detained by a federal law enforcement agency will have their cheek swabbed, The Associated Press reported, a move beyond the previous policy of collecting DNA from convicted felons.
The Justice Department will use authority given by Congress from laws passed in 2005 and 2006, The AP reported. The government estimated that its several dozen law enforcement agencies make 140,000 arrests each year.

Those arrested but not convicted can request the Justice Department remove the sample from the database.
Todd Spencer, executive vice president of OOIDA, said changing the DNA samples requirement from convicted felons to arrestees was “one heck of a big leap to take.”

“I think that’s problematic for a lot of people for a lot of reasons,” Spencer told Land Line. “I think I would expect that to be challenged.”
Those convicted of crimes frequently are already forced to submit DNA for federal databases, said Jim Baxter, President of the National Motorists Association – a Milwaukee-based organization that fights for the rights of motorists. The difference is, however, that those convicted are just that – convicted, Baxter said.

“When a person is arrested it doesn’t mean they’re guilty of anything,” Baxter told Land Line. “It’s one thing to be arrested and another to be convicted. Our point would be as long as you can identify the person. This seems like overkill to throw them into a federal database.”

DNA samples for newbornes!!

This is a major step forward to helping catch criminals. However, my thouhgts ar ethat we need to take it even further. The ones that feel "violated" or want to samples to be destroyed becasue htere's no conviction are flat out wrong. if they're truely innocent, having a complete DNA database will go a long way in proving guilt or innocence. Here's my thoughts and a way to drastically reduce crime in 18 - 20 years!!! Take a DNA sample from every newborne!! They already take footprints and they draw blood anyway. Make a national database of DNA and it can be referred to in every single future crime. Just think what this will do to reduce crime when these babies become 18, 19, 20 years old and they commit foolish crimes where ther eis always some sort of trace evidence. Rapes, assaults, etc.........all the police would need would be a sperm sample or scrapings under the nails. BUT, we have to start now in order for it to be effective and we have to ignore the stubborn cries of "invasion of privacy". If there's no crime, theres no invasion.

Cotroversial.........sure. Effective.....you bet!!

Here's another thought..

If we collect DNA from all of those newborns, should they become crime victims, or accident victims, and not be able to identify themselves, they could easily be indentified! No morew searching for the identity of "John Doe"! Now wouldn't THAT save the taxpayer a small fortune?

keep in mind

I'm all for having possibly exonerating evidence at hand. But the other side of the coin, LEO's are people too. There are many cases of LEO's planting evidence because they were pissed off at someone, except in that case it would be planting DNA and the case would be closed before it began.

Now don't get me wrong, LEO's have a potentially VERY dangerous job and I respect them for what they do and go through. A majority of them are fine, decent people. But we can't put them all on a pedestal and expect them to be perfect.

This doesn't go nearly far enough. We need legislation requiring all subjects of the United States to send in DNA samples before the end of the year. They must also submit a report of any and all laws they may have violated during the past 10 years. Ignorance of the laws shall be no excuse for not self-reporting.

This is scary
Getting closer and closer to being bar coded and government controlled

To take away the freedom of the many to protect the few will be the down fall of democracy

Just think how good this will be for our economy. We already have more people in prison than any other nation on Earth, but this clearly isn't enough people. With more and more prisons being run as for-profit businesses, we need a substantial increase in the prison population to ensure that our prisons can compete with the output of prisons in China.

With a minimum of 30% of the US population properly and gainfully convicted and incarcerated, the US Gross Domestic Product will return to the top of the list. And since people aren't exactly lining-up for jobs as prisoners, we will have to be pro-active, as a Nation, and make sure that no violation goes unemployed.

OK you lost me
Your saying that because prisons are for profit, the more we imprison via the government mandated DNA testing of every one. It will actually help improve our economy.
And what does that have to do with China
I did read your post a couple of times it it made no sense
