Truckers beware

Truckers beware

CHINO - Large commercial trucks could be seen Friday rolling up and down Ramona Avenue just south of the 60 Freeway and north of Riverside Drive.

The problem: The trucks are doing so illegally, much to the frustration of area residents angry about safety, noise and the deteriorating condition of neighborhood streets.

A city ordinance bans heavy commercial trucks from Ramona, Central and Mountain avenues north of Riverside Drive and south of the 60, police spokesman Lt. Al Cheatham said.

Euclid Avenue is the only legal truck route from Chino's industrial areas to the 60, and drivers must use Edison Avenue to get to the 71 Freeway.
Still, residents say the trucks use the banned streets nearly every day as shortcuts. The residential streets are not designed to handle trucks, Cheatham said.
On Friday, large 18-wheelers could be seen rolling down the prohibited area of Ramona about every 15 minutes. Potholes are scattered along the stretch. The city recently approved money to repave Ramona from Riverside Drive to Walnut Avenue.

I was just in Chino a couple weeks ago and one thing I noticed right off the top is that they don't have any posted truck route or "no trucks" signs anywhere. I drove into the distribution center through an area that was obviously designed for retail sales (narrow winding streets, small turn lanes, etc) and out over roads that looked a little more acceptable.

Anyway, I used Central to get back to Edison for the 71 after coming from Edison to Pipeline. Edison itself doesn't look like it's designed for trucks. What's funny is that north of that in Ontario, there are roads that are designated for trucks that simply shouldn't be!
