| Trucker illegally dumped clam waste Trucker illegally dumped clam waste 4/23/08 The News Journal, DE Quote:
Michael J. Costello, an environmental protection officer with the state Division of Air and Waste Management, was dispatched to a rural site at the Marshy Hope Wildlife Area near Bridgeville.
There, Costello discovered a large pile of clam meat at the edge of a tax ditch.
Leading up to the stinking pile were tell-tale tracks from a large truck. He made the discovery on a Friday afternoon in early August 2007.
Costello planned to contact officials with Seawatch International, a seafood processing company in Milford and the one local clam processing facility in the area the following Monday morning.
Before he could do that, a neighboring property owner -- who made the initial odor complaint -- called Costello on Sunday afternoon to report a red dump truck in the area. Costello returned to discover a second load of clam waste dumped in the area.
Working with the neighbor and Seawatch officials, Costello traced the clams back to a contractor that Seawatch had hired to haul and dispose of them.
Within a few days, Costello and a fellow enforcement officer were tracking the red Mack dump truck from the clam plant to a rural soybean field. There, they arrested Everrett E. Thomas. http://www.delawareonline.com/apps/p...WS01/804230332 | |
