Trucking school owner defends record

BRIDGEPORT — The owner of a tractor-trailer school shut down by the state this week vows to fight the action, saying today that he won't leave students in a lurch.

"They need to either give me an extended temporary license or tell [the department of] motor vehicles to test my students. This shouldn't impact my students. It's not ethical," said C. Donald Lane Jr., owner of D&L Tractor Trailer School.

State officials counter that they can't test students unless Lane produces a student roster — something they say he has repeatedly refused to do — plus pay fees owed for the testing.

The Barnum Avenue school was closed by a temporary order Tuesday, after the state Department of Higher Education staged a sting operation there last week. A state employee was able to enroll in the school, even though its license expired in February.
Lane said his employee made a mistake in signing up the "student." "She should not have done it, but there was no payments. That document is next to worthless," he said.
D&L has been at odds with the state's Private Occupational School Unit for some time over the school's financial status, and refusal to submit financial and student records as is required by law. A revocation hearing was held in November. Lane said he let the school's license expire Feb. 28 because he was reluctant to renew it until the state decided whether he could continue to train students to get Class A and B tractor-trailer licenses.

It would seem unethical for him to continue to HOLD their money, and the signed lending contracts too.

But I see he made no mention of that.
