Skepticism about I-5 bridge grows in Oregon regional agency

Skepticism about I-5 bridge grows in Oregon regional agency

Quote:

PORTLAND, Ore. — Opposition to a new Interstate 5 bridge across the Columbia River is growing in a key agency.

Three of seven members of the board of Metro, the Portland regional government agency, have signed on to a resolution that calls for charging tolls on the current bridge rather than replacing it right away.

The toll would raise money for improvements to the current bridge to withstand earthquakes as well as to increase mass-transit use and make on-ramps safer.

The proposal wouldn’t preclude a new bridge later on, but it would test the reaction of drivers to tolls — any new bridge is expected to be so expensive it will require tolls. The current bridge, made up of spans built in 1917 and 1958, is toll-free.

HOLD UP! That bridge is one of only two ways to get to WA from OR! Everybody will be forced onto I205 if they don't want to pay the toll!

Just a point of clarification.... Metro is NOT the final authority on the new bridge..... Only ONE Metro councilor has ONE vote on a 39 member regional task force in regards to the new bridge....

It would be nice if they put that new bridge near Camas/Troutdale. If you take the Glen Jackson/205 bridge it is a 21 mile trip. If you could cross the river it would be about two miles.

I don't know about building bridges, but it sure would help spread out the drivers a little. I like to drive on highway 14 but it is quicker driving i84.

I would take the scenic drive more often on 14 if I could cross over to Oregon around Camas. It's beautiful! Plus I like to see how long I can go without using my brakes.
