America needs a more efficient trucking industry

America needs a more efficient trucking industry

Last month, a honking motorcade of trucks drove around the U.S. Capitol flashing signs that declared, "When Trucks Stop, America Stops." They were driving home the point that commercial traffic is vital to the American economy, and no industry is more affected by rising energy costs.

As costs rise for the trucking industry, our costs rise. The additional price of the truckers' fuel raises the price of our food, health care, manufacturing, retail, waste removal and other goods and services.
The answer is not to burden these businesses with additional taxes for the carbon dioxide they release. Technological advances can mitigate the fuel crisis just as effectively as tax increases. Congress should encourage the development and introduction of technologies that will reduce fuel costs and consumption.

In this case, the technologies we need already exist. We just need research to adapt them to the trucking industry. Everyone has seen hybrid cars, which combine gas and electric motors for a powerful and efficient engine. Hybrid technology can be even more effective in trucks, because trucks consume so much more fuel.

If the government were to take the emissions regulations off there could be a massive fuel economy improvement. The reasons that I say this. VG Turbo increases performance and fuel economy. I f a company were to implinment a "common rail" fuel system for trucks this would provide a very efficent fuel delivery system that could increase power and fuel mileage. This is if you take off all emissions equipment and left these items on I am willing to bet that you could hit 8-9 mpg loaded. But it is not going to happen. At one point in time congress needs to realize that it will either be fuel economy or emissions.

I drive a pre EGR ISX Cummins, and I get about the best mileage in the fleet but that isn't too good considering how bad the trailers are that we pull. A blanket statement about fuel economy is meaningless, unless you qualify it with a trailer type.

The best trailer in a box is a reefer, unless you get one of those few vans with the bubble on the top front end.

Any trailer with tandms rather than a spread is going to do marginally better because of less turbulence generated under the trailer.

Probably the easiest pulling trailer would be an empty flat with a tandem axle, I pulled a few of them with a similar setup to ours with chicken crates strapped to the deck, and they did pull more easily. The ride wasn't nearly as good though.
