A fleet of Oregon Department of Transportation truck inspectors geared up Tuesday to stop unsafe commercial drivers at the Port of Entry weigh station near Ashland.
Inspectors from across the state will work around the clock through Saturday here and in Klamath Falls to catch truck drivers who are breaking state and federal rules and potentially delivering danger to the state's highways, said Sharon Wyle, compliance specialist with the department's Motor Carrier Transportation Division.

"Our number one goal is to prevent crashes," she said.
In the first half of this decade, that goal seemed to be slipping away.
From 2001 through 2006, the number of truck crashes in Oregon increased 33 percent to 1,403 from 1,053, despite the fact that the number of miles trucks traveled only increased 8 percent, state statistics show.

Unlike most states, Oregon analyzes commercial vehicle crash data to assign fault. Officials determined that while trucks and passenger cars were equally at fault in causing commercial-vehicle crashes, wrecks caused by trucks were almost always the driver's fault, Wyle explained.
