Truckers taking off pounds during tough times

Truckers taking off pounds during tough times

David Charles figures the way to make a buck in a tough trucking market is to travel light.

"Most of the time I have less than 50,000 pounds on, total gross weight," he said.

The legal limit without an overweight permit is 80,000.

The idea is getting maximum miles per gallon of diesel fuel. So far this year he is averaging 8.29 miles per gallon. That's a couple of miles more than truckers get on average.

Having his mpg figured down to two decimal points shows the sharp pencil Charles uses in deciding whether a load is worth taking.

Last week, he got one of his favorites, an empty trailer. He picked it up in David City, Neb., and dropped it in Dickinson, N.D.

How much is he getting paid to run that light? You can pull all the light loads you want but if your not getting paid for it then getting 8+ miles would not matter.. Somebody who is getting paid a good rate $$ to pull a 79,000 and only gets 5.5Mpg could still make more money then this guy getting 8+...

More to it then just fuel mileage...

(although 8 Mpg is dang good lol)

If the trailer is full and weighs less it is good. Most van trailer loads are priced at the trailer full rate not the weight rate.

True if its full but its not the easiest thing to get full light loads.. not enough to keep a 8+ Mpg avg, unless you just keep sitting and waiting..

Sure you can get plenty of that cheap freight that fills your trailer up and may not be that heavy.. (always cheap freight around)

Half loads pay almost as much as that cheap freight does..
