State cops cracking down on truckers

State cops cracking down on truckers
7/23/08
Chicago Daily Herald, IL
Quote:
Truckers, be on alert.
Illinois State Police and the Department of Transportation are setting up daily temporary weigh stations throughout the Northwest suburbs.
Wednesday's spot was on busy Randall Road, just north of Silver Glen Road, in South Elgin.
"Monday through Friday we have scales set up in different spots," Sgt. Juan Morales said.

The purpose of the roving weigh stations, Morales said, is to make sure large trucks aren't doing any unnecessary damage to roadways.

So can a permit load be considered Necessary Damage since carriers pay for the permit?

Why not take all of the revenue (ie., permits, licenses, registrations, fines, ect) and build better roads/highways instead of spending the money on lame azz social programs. Build highways out of high density concrete with a bare minimum of 2' of sub-base, 4' of concrete instead going cheap and using asphalt.

Good questions. Heavy permit loads usually have a slower speed limit, I guess this if less stress.

I have also to agree on the make up of the road base. There is a great deal of asphalt used and it is bad within a very short period.

But to the REAL reason that Illinois is doing this.

REVENUE.......

Is this another Illinois scam.

I beleieve Illinois had a sceem in the past, where by they were one of the states, if not the only state, that had a wieght limit of 78,000 lbs. when most limits were 80,000 lbs. When a driver drove throught an Illinois scale a driver would have to pay for the extra 2,000 lbs over the wieght limit. I beleive the fine was $250.00.

Addition: This was in the early 1980's. Around 1983 I believe. I was there.

I have lived here since 1963. That is the first I have heard of that. My uncles drove trucks through here for many years and never made any comments about it.

According to the 2008 Motor Carrier's Road Atlas, IL's GVW limit is 80K.

I know. He was saying they were charging 250.00 and that the weight was limited to 78,000.

The only lower weight the state has is on some of the highways that are limited to 72,000 I think.

There were several states from the Great Lakes to the Gulf Coast that had a weight limit of 78,000, dividing the US in half until the Govt put a stop to it sometime in the 1990s.
