Lanes of I-80 bridge closed after cracks found

Lanes of I-80 bridge closed after cracks found

Quote:

LECLAIRE, Iowa — Officials have closed the outside lanes of an Interstate 80 bridge in eastern Iowa after finding cracks in its steel framing.

The Iowa Department of Transportation says the lane closings at the steel-girder bridge in LeClaire are a precaution.

Instead of funding the idiotic social programs, Pelosi and Reid should free up the tax money to repair or replace our infrastructure.

I thought that would have to be the Mississippi River bridge on I-80 between Iowa and Illinois. That brings it down to 1 lane each way. I guess we'd better think of taking 280, at least during heavy traffic periods, or detouring to I-74 off of 80.

At least they found it before it fell in the river, makes me wonder about crossing any bridge that's been there for awhile. Anyone else going to take the hammer lane across from now on?

I guess we should assume that the bridge became this way only during the last 2 years. Give me a break. I thought you didn't want the government doing micro management.

Why didn't the administration do this many years ago?

Isn't this really more of a local problem? The bridge should have been on a program for repairs or replacement before now.

Where do the state and local governments get their money...from Nancy's and Harry's authorization right????

CA pays the most out of taxes IIRC and for every dollar sent to D.C. CA receives a paltry .10. Our infrastructure is failing and what used to be the "Crown Jewel" of the interstate system is one of the most congested and degenerated road systems in America. Whereas other states receive more and are slowly repairing and replacing their infrastructure.

Pelosi and Boxer are both from CA and should be representing the needs of the state but in reality, they represent their own selfish desires and liberal agendas.

No doubt that they should strive to do it correctly. But still, the problems with the bridges have been brewing for several years. This is not exactly the result of anything that congress is responsible for. These bridges did not have the problem overnight. Many of the bridges have problems in our state. The money has come in during both the republican and democrat governor years and been wisely spent on other things.

The congress can only disperse money in the past, but the locals have to be held accountable as well. In the case of the party affiliation or liberal comments, I see both as being responsible and lacking.

Bridges should demand more attention due to their exposure of the elements and load variations. It is not hard for the average person to see corrosion on a bridge through either rust, cracked or bubbled paint. Or are people so wrapped up in their commutes to notice such things?

They should, but this bridge is not really in a highly populated area like Chicago.

Besides, if I read it right, the crack was under the bridge. I really hope the drivers didn't try to look there while driving. Although, one never really knows for sure...

Yeah,
There are bridges such as the Oakland Bay Bridge that you can see the dynamics of the structure while driving on it.

I think the solution is that our Federal taxes should only pay for the protection of our country inside and out. Let the states tax and use according to their needs. CA needs much more in infrastructure than say TX so why can't CA's taxpayers just pay for their state and not the needs of TX and visa versa?

It would have its points. However, not meaning anything toward Wyoming or Montana, consider that these two states are not as highly populated and they would have problems with the infrastructure cost unless it is spread out possibly.
