Kansas companies put out of business by high fuel costs

Kansas companies put out of business by high fuel costs

Quote:
After more than 40 years in the business, Mike Ross closed his Salina trucking company on July 1. Tony Gaston cut his Hutchinson fleet from 50 to 26 trucks. Now he is looking at laying off some office staff. Mike Fritch of Burrton went from three trucks to one. Even then, he says, it's touch and go.
"It's fuel costs," Fritch said. "Cash flow disappears and fuel costs keep going up.
"You have to make the decision: Do you buy a new set of tires, find used tires or try to keep running with what you got? I haven't bought new tires since 2002. I'm cutting corners everywhere I can."

And DOT is right there to help you right out of business... Unfortunately drivers have to cut corners, and they defiantly are cutting corners when it comes to maintenance.. DOT knows this and is taking advantage of it, its one thing to keep trucks safe (and they should) but making a huge profit of a crippled business is not the way.. Huge fines are not needed at this point in time, they need strict mandatory fix it tickets....

But after they run all the American companies out of business, they'll have those nice Mexican trucks to replace them. Let's cripple the trucking companies with high fuel prices, reduce the speed a driver can drive, limit the hours a driver can be on the road but make it harder for him to get home....sure sounds like they're concerned about safety.
