With Many Rigs Off The Road, Trucking Firms Back On Track

Quote:
Few industries are as susceptible to the whims of the oil market as the U.S. trucking industry, with its long hauls and its diesel-guzzling tractor-trailers.
It stands to reason that a drop in oil prices would have a positive impact on trucking firms.
That's true. But lower prices at the pump aren't the only reason trucking stocks recently hit their highest point in more than a year.
Equally important — maybe more so — is the fact that there aren't nearly as many trucks on the road as there were a couple of years ago. This has reduced competition and improved pricing power.
More than 2,000 trucking firms went out of business in the first half of 2008, says Clayton Boyce, vice president of public affairs at the American Trucking Association.
Most closures involved smaller operations with little more than a handful of trucks. Still, a thousand here and a thousand there, and all of sudden you have a lot less competition and a lot more leverage. (...) Truckers

I'm looking for another surge in truck sales . All those trucks prebought to avoid buying trucks with DPF's have several hundred thousand miles on them now . With fleet owners aware of stricter 2010 emissions there will likely be an increase in sales in the next year .

I am almost certain that people will repeat the truck surge that happened just a few years ago for 2010. More emissions means less fuel mileage, and it is only going to get worse.

Many of the used trucks are being shipped over seas. It has kept the US prices from dropping as much as they should have.
Many trucks, 05 and older have dropped in price over 10,000. Most have in fact. And non-aero trucks prices are dropping like a rock. I believe that will continue with the non-aero ones, but others will stabilize.
Many new truck prices are down 20k
