Big rig foes, haulers state their opinions

Big rig foes, haulers state their opinions

The Post-Standard - Syracuse.com, NY
Quote:
Members of the Upstate Safety Task Force last week made sure state transportation officials understand their anger that tractor-trailers filled with New York City garbage are using the pristine back roads of the Finger Lakes region.
At a meeting last week in Syracuse, local residents, state Department of Transportation officials, members of the New York State Motor Truck Association and politicians from the region gathered to discuss the DOT's draft regulations controlling truck traffic throughout the state.

Wonder how the NIMBY's would feel if the truckers stopped hauling EVE#RTHING into their towns for a week.

Yeah right! Maybe them not being able to get their toys, high priced drinking water, and all the other stuff might wake them up a bit. Make it two weeks though, to really make the lesson sink in.

The article is not referring to all trucks. It is only referring to the garbage hauling trucks.

Now, I understand the need for them, but have you ever seen them losing their load? I have.

Have you ever caught a smell from them when they pass? I have.

Is there a reason they run the back roads rather than the toll road? Most likely because the company does not want to pay the tolls.

Are the tolls included in the hauling rate? Most likely.

It seems to me they may have a valid point. I know this flags me the wrong way, but look at it from a practical and business standpoint as well.

No, your comment doesn't flag you the wrong way. You have very valid, logical points too. If they are running that route just to save the toll money, then they should use the toll roads. The companies can write the tolls off on their taxes anyway.

I doubt the regulations will restrict only trash haulers, but all big trucks.

Looking at most of the roads in that region on a map, I wouldn't want to run them unless I had to. As we all know, sometimes you have to use those roads to get into and out of your pick up point. I'd like to see more specific information on where those trucks are actually coming from or going to. I doubt they are all from New York City. How does their trash leave their area anyway?

Maybe they need to look at using tarps on the trucks to keep the trash from blowing out. If they are already using tarps, then maybe they need to look at some different ones that cover better.

Just some additional thoughts on an obviously thorny issue for those involved.

The companies most likely are receiving the toll money as part of the rate. They are probably not passing the tolls to the drivers or owners they use. It is just another method the companies have to make money.
