They may not mandate 55 for 4 wheelers, but whats to stop them from mandating 55 for trucks. They are sneaky enough to try to get it in through the back door just like when they finally got radar detectors banned in trucks. They tried for years to get a law passed banning radar detectors in trucks and and they never got it passed by congress. So the powers that be got the DOT to make an ammendment to the rule book banning radar detectors in commercial vehicles. If they can't do it one way, they will do it another.

At the point of 55 is slow, I could actually take state roads to get to someplaces faster than I could if I took the interstate. I would be willing to bet that more drivers would be willing to take that shortcu on the state road now instead of the interstate.

Trucker: Why I can't drive 55
8/19/08
San Jose Mercury News, USA
Quote:
Q I can no longer idly sit by and continue to allow you to advocate a 55 mph speed limit without providing you with some facts.

Paul Cline
Roadshow Consultant
A And what might those be, Mr. Roadshow Consultant? Paul drives for a local trucking company, making the San Jose-to-Fresno run six nights a week. Q First, I am in wholehearted agreement that slower speeds reduce fuel consumption. However, there is a huge flaw in your exuberance. Rep. Jackie Speier, D-San Mateo, had the right idea suggesting 60 mph and obviously did more research. With only as little as 10 percent of the motoring public thinking economy and following your suggestion to go as slow as 55, there is going to be a detrimental impact on truck traffic.
