Tsa takes on trucking

TSA TAKES ON TRUCKING
8/25/08

Officials at the Transportation Security Administration are turning an eye toward the trucking industry.

As Robert B. Stephan, the Department of Homeland Security’s assistant secretary for infrastructure protection noted at an advisory council meeting last month, the transportation sector has a “massive array of potential facilities (and) targets.”

Now, spurred in part by congressional mandates contained in homeland security legislation enacted last August, as well their own initiative, the TSA plans to do something about it.

Last month, however, the TSA released a list of hazardous materials deemed “security-sensitive,” seen as a precursor to meeting 9/11 act requirements that put special conditions on such materials, such as tracking and route planning.

The TSA said the list and the correlating requirements for such goods, such as background checks for drivers and other employees as well as en-route security plans, are voluntary for now, but eventually regulations will need to be put in place to comply with the law.
Background checks are already part of the process for getting the HazMat endorsement for drivers. There's nothing voluntary about those. Hopefully, the TSA actually learns something about the trucking industry before they start regulating it. Then again, how many of the agencies that already regulate it really understand it?
