Trucker warns others about theft after APU cover stolen for scrap metal

Trucker warns others about theft after APU cover stolen for scrap metal
8/27/08

Quote:
Soaring diesel fuel prices have led to a rash of thefts of diesel fuel being siphoned from truckers’ tanks while they’re parked for the night at truck stops nationwide.
Now, it seems thieves are turning their attention to another way to prey on already strapped truckers – this time by stealing the aluminum covers off of their auxiliary power units and selling them as scrap metal.
OOIDA Life Member Gery Nelson of Grovespring, MO, said it happened to him while he was parked for the night on Monday, Aug. 25, at the Flying J at Exit 37 in El Paso, TX.
Besides talking to a manager at the Flying J about what happened to him, Nelson said he also filed a report with the El Paso Police Department.

The big thing around here is thieves stealing catalytic convertors from vehicles in park and ride lots.

That catalytic converter thing has been gaining in popularity around here, too.
Step one: get copies of the driver's licenses if you're going to buy a bunch of scrap off of someone who doesn't ordinarily bring it in.
Step two: if it says City of... something or another, call that city before you pay for the scrap fees! They've been losing sewer caps in some areas of the country!!

Hell, in Gibson cemetery, Gibson Missouri, thieves stole the brass headstone plaques off the graves to sell for scrap. No respect.

around here there are 3 major crimes of this nature:
1- stealing catalytic converters from cars parked in front of houses or at p/rs
2- not siphoning gas but just punching a hole in the thank and filling cans that way
3- stealing copper wire from DOT signs/projects

don't let the media play this off as a function of a worsening economy. around here these crimes are perpetrated by tweakers (meth addicts). however, i did read somewhere that even the price of meth is increasing with inflation ... so maybe it's the "economy's" fault after all.
