Long-haul trucker was like a tourist

Long-haul trucker was like a tourist

Quote:
CONCORD - A lady long-haul trucker is a rare bird. The open road doesn't seem to be a place cut out for a gal, what with its grungy truck stops and stereotypically raunchy radio traffic.
But Patricia James took to the interstates like an 18-wheeler to diesel. She relished the long, solitary drives across swaths of America. She was like a tourist on a trip, snapping pictures with her digital camera as she traversed the nation's highways and byways.

Nice story, but sad to hear she has passed on. It's also good to see a good spin on trucking.

Yes it is sad to see that she has passed... sounds like she really enjoyed the job and was treated fairly..

I tend to dislike the "professional tourist" that the article tries to promote. I understand they are trying to leave a nice impression about this lady but the job is not really a tourist type setting as they say... Trucking companies try to promote this in order to get new blood into the business or old people ready to retire.. although they have cut back on the old retires becuase it all about maximising profits on each truck now.. used to be a little room to allow older couples to take their time but not nowadays, fuel had take much of that room away and they need to keep "each" truck moving to make a profit.

Anyways if you call seeing the country from the drivers seat then sure its a paid tourist job.. The truth is you hardly ever have time to stop at the wonderful sites you see and "enjoy" them.. Its rush rush rush and when you do get time off it usually is somewhere in the middle of NE and nothing around for 100 miles... The other thing truckers run into in the "seeing the country" and finding places you would like to stop at is, when you decide you want to stop you find yourself not wanted with "NO TRUCK" signs everywhere....

Anyways.. sorry the lady passed, sounds like she was a very nice person..

truckerjo... I agree with you.... There are places in southern UT, north Az, that I would love to stop and just look but there are no places to park.. I am talking about the Virgin River Gorge.. That place is just so beautiful, I don't believe I could ever get tired of looking at it.. and when you are going on 15 towards Denver, the different colors in the rocks as you are going down the downgrade, just awesome.. and the only place to really park is on the runaway ramp and that is just not safe at all.. lol
