Great Dane lays off nearly half its workforce

More and more jobs just going away...

Great Dane lays off nearly half its workforce
TERRE HAUTE — Citing an economic downturn and a credit crunch to some small customers, Great Dane Trailers temporarily will lay off 108 workers — nearly 50 percent of its work force – at its Terre Haute plant.

The layoffs will take effect Friday.

The company reported the layoffs in an Oct. 8 letter to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development in compliance with the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act. The company said it is uncertain how long of the layoff will remain.

Gary Abell, spokesman for the Department of Workforce Development, said it was the first notice the department has received that states layoffs are directly tied to a national credit crunch.

WOW, yup, they sure are going away. BTW, I moved this post to Truckers News section due to its trucking nature. Thanks for the post.

Great Dane Trailers to close manufacturing facility in Savannah, Ga.

Great Dane Trailers to close manufacturing facility in Savannah, Ga.
Quote:
Great Dane Trailers on Tuesday, Nov. 11, announced plans to close its original manufacturing facility in Savannah, Ga., effective Jan. 9. The company cited the effect of the extended economic downturn on the transportation industry coupled with the need for more efficient production as the key factors behind its decision to close the refrigerated trailer plant.

About 270 plant hourly and office employees will be affected by this closing, according to Great Dane, but the corporate office -- which includes sales and marketing, design engineering, manufacturing engineering, research and development, retail accounting, MIS, corporate quality and customer service -- will not be affected.

Layoffs?

Has anyone heard if there have been any layoffs at any other trucking companies?

Great Dane's a trailer manufacturing company, not a trucking company, but yes, they and I'm sure others, have laid off employees or are coming close to it.

I vote everyone do their part - go bump into one another and create more business - just be careful not to hurt yourselves! LOL
