Van Time for mandatory retirement age for truck drivers

Time for mandatory retirement age for truck drivers

Quote:
Traffic fatalities can be reduced dramatically if we concentrate our efforts on the target that has the best opportunity for success. And that target, in my opinion, should be an all-out campaign to reduce roadway deaths caused by trucks.

As an attorney specializing in vehicle accident liability cases, I have argued in the past that truck related deaths can be reduced by paying more attention to highway safety and driver fatigue. In recent months I have become convinced the effort should now involve a three-prong approach - safer roads, less driver fatigue, and a mandatory retirement age for truck drivers.

I want historical data on all the wrecks involving persons 65 and over.

I will bet that statistics will show younger drivers are still a higher risk than older.

Well, if they want to do this, then how about mandatory retirement of DL's for drivers over a certain age. Or at the least, mandatory road testing.

This guy also fails to look at the actual statistics related to driver fatigue or tiredness. If he did, he would know that car drivers have a much higher problem with this than truck drivers.

I totally agree with a mandatory retirement age for truck drivers. 95 years of age.

They should do it the FAA does for commercial pilots. At 60 you can no longer fly as a commercial pilot.

I would think so too.

As Mark said, I know that they do this for airline pilots, there was actually a recent fuss about it because they wanted to raise the mandatory retirement age to 65 or something.

Age 65 for airline pilots is now a reality. Only one pilot over the age of 60 is allowed in the cockpit though.

After age 65 (it used to be 60) you can no longer fly as a required crew member on apart 121 flight (basically commercial airliners). There are many jobs for commercial pilots that don't involve part 121.

There's also never been a study done to show that this rule improves safety.
