Snow Deadly danger of flying ice

The rare but deadly danger of flying ice

1/16/09
Minneapolis Star Tribune, MN
Quote:
If you've ever cringed as icy snow chunks flew off another vehicle and hurtled toward your car, the story of Bob Brobst will make you even more wary.
Brobst was driving past Rochester the day after Christmas when a 4-foot chunk of snow or ice flew off the top of a trailer. It hit his windshield, activated his airbags and sent his car into an electrical pole on the opposite side of the road. He never regained consciousness and died from the injuries two weeks later.

This is a sad event but more people are going to die if states follow Connecticut's route and require truckers to climb up on top of the trailer to clear ice. Ice could just as easily fall off a nearby tree. Or a plane could crash on top of you. We should stop legislating acts of nature and only control what we CAN.

Having drivers climb on top of icy trailers should scare the h### out of insurance carriers.

Just wait until the first workmen's compensation claims come in.

It might be more interesting to contact OSHA concerning this. After all, the place the trailer is being climbed on is not exactly truck related and probably covered under their regulations for the workers on the site.

This is a real mess. On one hand I can see the need for cleaning the trucks, on the other I cannot see me EVER getting on top of an icy/snowy trailer! There is no way in hell I would do that as a fall from about 14' off a trailer would not even get you workman's compensation...but, most likely, death...or you'd break your neck and be a slobbering invalid or something. IF state make laws that require the trucks to be cleaned, then they need to make the weigh stations have a mechanical/safe way to do so. Making laws where there is no way to prudently follow them is unconstitutional and if I EVER got a ticket for that...it would go to the Supreme Court.

This just goes to prove the point that we have people making laws about something they have no logical idea about. I agree with WiseOne. If they have implemented a law like that, they should be responsible for having facilities to be able to do this safely. That's like, if you work for a company and they require safety equipment, such as steel toed boots or hard hats, they are responsible for supplying them. This will end up in more laws suits than you can stir with a stick!

The truck that caused the fatality in this StarTrib story was a pick up truck pulling a small, personal trailer. Somehow the issue magically changes to be about semis. This story is a prime example of how the media and general public will use any excuse to demonize trucks and truckers. Read the story again and try not to throw up.

I drove for a company that had a trailer snow scraper. The only thing it ever removed was fiberglass trailer roofs. That is, until one day when a guy forgot to raise the plow part of the device and ripped the whole thing apart!
