Van Truckers react to plan to close rest stops

Truckers react to plan to close rest stops
2/19/09
WSLS- VA
Quote:
VDOT’s plan to cover the $2.6 billion shortfall includes closing 25 of 42 rest stops.
Along Interstate 81, 11 of 14 rest stops will close. The only three that will stay open are Winchester, Bristol and a trucks only stop in Abingdon.
All of the stops in VDOT’s Salem District will close.
The parking lot of the Ironto rest stop was full of big rigs Thursday evening. Most of the truck drivers were asleep in the back of their rigs.
“I’m sure they’re be more tired truckers on the road.“, says Richard Hicks, a trucker from Tennessee.
Closing rest areas would save $12 million.
It is just a recommendation at this point.
The Commonwealth Transportation Board will vote at its June meeting. If the board votes to close the rest stops, they will close in July.

I'm thinkin' we were talking about the rest areas along I-81 on another thread... Let's see the VSP are passing out tickets to truckers for parking to long in the limited spots in he rest areas, and now the Governor f Va is going to solve this problem for us by closing 11 of the 14 along the I-81 cororidor, and save the state of Va taxpayers 12 milliom dollars. Why Thank You, Governor! I wonder why I didn't come up with this soulition... Yep for all the wrong reasons.. Well the best thing is we won't have to pay t park for a few hours and then get told to move. and if you checked out the article did you notice the comments about it???? These ladis a gentlemen were none to happy, Tired truckers, no toliets, and what ? I sure hope they get that changed the same as they got the DMV issue changed a few years back...

.
While it saves $12 million. It provides for an additional $60 million in yearly revenue....through fines to truckers.

Parking on ramps, running over hours, the list goes on and on.

They just keep trying to make it harder for truckers which is just stoopid! They say that we are risk because we don't get enough rest and then they take away places where we can rest. Why don't they just short cut it all and send every driver a ticket or two each month for HOS violations and be done with it!
