Study: Deregulation still haunts harbor truckers
2/24/09
The Journal of Commerce Online, NJ
Quote:
NEW YORK -- The deregulation of the U.S. trucking industry by the 1980 ICC Termination Act continues to impact how the 7,000 truckers who deliver and pick up containers daily at the ports of New York and New Jersey earn their livelihood.
It has resulted in lower trucker earnings, driver shortages, higher truck emissions and mounting inefficiencies, says a new study by David Bensman, professor of labor studies and employment relations at the Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations, and Yael Bromberg, a student at Rutgers School of Law-Newark.
The study based its conclusions on a survey of 299 truck drivers selected at random at the ports of Newark, Elizabeth and Bayonne.

The port trucking scene is but a microcosm of the national scene.

“That translates to a shade under $10 per hour for independent contractors and $12 an hour for employee-drivers,” Bensman said. He added that neither group could make deliveries for additional companies.
How do you run a small business for $10/h? That explains the "Duct-taped and tie-wired rigs.....

So out of that $10/h, O/O's can pay their truck mortgage, fuel, insurance, maintenance, permits, tags, and manage to pay themselves a salary?........

The independent contractors net $10 per hour for the total day after fuel and fixed costs are covered. They are paid by the load. I assume they spend most of the day waiting in line. Who knows? The tractor may actually earn $75 per hour for the time the engine is running. Like most truckers, if they earn above the dividing line between working class and middle class ($28,000) it is due to working long hours. Even $10 per hour net is survivable if you are working 70 hours.

I doubt that these guys can even pay themselves a salary, let alone set up an IRA account.

ignorance.....allowing the bottom-feeders to come in and drop the rates.

Bottom-feeders don't care about supply and demand.....
If the rates are $80/h, they'll come in at $50/h (as in dump trucks)

I have seen this take place over and over again.....

Bottom-feeders in the Drywall industry under-cut the industry back in the 80's in SO-CAL and in the 90's they wanted to get the union wages back....seems that Salvadorians were coming in and under-cutting the Mexican drywall installers....The union told them to go pound sand.....that was justice....

Once again, capitalism and free enterprise are brutal without regulations. It is simple supply and demand. Immigrant truckers and their older equipment are a never-ending supply. Independent contractors are not allowed to bargain collectively. Of course, the ocean shipping companies claim they do not have a dollar to spare and would have to raise shipping rates if pay and conditions were better for the port truckers.

Signage in Chicago rail yards is in English and Polish. In Long Beach, signs are in Spanish and English. In Vancouver, signs are in Russian and English.

The $64 Million question (I know it's supposed to be the $64 Thousand Question....inflation....) is which culture is worst at bottom-feeding?
The Irish were accused of it in the 1800's...even to the point that they were treated like the blacks.....I know what lady Liberty's sign says but dammit.....some of these people need to get a clue, matriculate and stop killing-off other American's businesses.
