Sterling Truck Corp. Closes After 11 Years

Sterling Truck Corp. Closes After 11 Years

By Frederick Kiel, Staff Reporter
Quote:
Sterling Truck Corp. officially ended its 11-year life span last month when the last Class 8 rolled off the St. Thomas, Ontario, assembly line, part of a final order for ABF Freight System Inc.

Parent firm Daimler AG declined requests last week from Transport Topics to discuss Sterling. But Dave Elliot, president of the Canadian Auto Workers, Local 1001, which represented workers at the plant, said the final new truck, of 257,300 produced, was completed on March 4.
“Daimler began moving out most of the equipment after that and will auction off whatever remains,” Elliot said.

He said about 18 employees will remain at the 485,000-square-foot plant until May 1 to assist in the cleanup effort.

Freightliner Corp., then the North American main subsidiary of what was then Daimler-Benz, announced in February 1997 that it had bought the heavy-duty division of Ford Motor Co., TT reported at the time. It did not give the price, but news reports put it between $200 million and $300 million.

Well, that shows how up to the minute I am. I thought they quit making Sterlings several years ago. . .

The shops that used to sell Ford sold Sterling, the dealers are some of the best, now they have lost their line to sell.

I never liked seeing dealers being shut out because of corporate pruning.

This is weird! I thought they closed last year some time, until I saw their booth and display at the truck show in Louisville this year. So I thought, maybe I was wrong. But now they are out of business. Makes you wonder why even bother wasting money on the display at the truck show.

Because they still have a lot of trucks on lots to unload . Daimler really shafted the dealers . Some of them sold more than one brand at their dealership and Daimler pressured them to sell only Sterlings . Some did . Now they have no product to sell and no other franchises are available . They are not going to stay in business as used truck lots to service Sterlings and do warranty work for Daimler . Sterlings were good trucks and popular with expediters and municipal services .

Beauty's only skin deep . So is ugly . They weren't OTR but were good for local use . That's why a lot of cities and states bought them .

Uh-uh. Gotta disagree with you on this one, Rick. Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly is UGLY TO THE BONE!

I really don't have a dog in this fight. I never drove, or had anything to do with a Sterling. I have driven some of the old commercial duty Fords though. Tough old work horses.

I'll agree that they aren't purty like a nice 379, but those Sterlings have a sorta ugly-cool look about 'em. Also, seems like pretty good bang for the buck on the used ones.
Anyone here have any real input on reliability, maintenance on 'em?
