Tennessee prohibits ‘texting’ while driving

Tennessee prohibits ‘texting’ while driving

Quote:
Tennessee is the latest state to outlaw texting while driving. The ban takes effect July 1.

Distracted driving is one of the bigger detriments to road safety. The new law in Tennessee is intended to help reduce one of the contributing factors to that problem.

Gov. Phil Bredesen signed into law a bill – SB393 – that prohibits people from operating a motor vehicle while reading, typing or sending text messages.

Offenders would face $50 fines and court costs up to $10. Violations would be considered nonmoving traffic violations, which means no points would be added to a person’s driving record.

Emergency personnel would be exempted.

More un-needed laws

I have a mixed argument in principle I am against making more un-needed laws. You already have a law against distracted driving and or negligent driving, this already covers texting and if not modify the existing law. I understand why they make a new law, because then the politicians can stand up proud and point out look what I did to help you all out, vote for me.

.
On the other hand:
.
I am all about states rights and them being the ones to make the laws, tax their constiuency, etc. because you have a more firm grasp of controling things in your state or moving to one that is in more agreement with your beliefs which would be another form of control since they would have one less taxpayer in their state.

Just my humble, possibly unwanted, opinion on the subject.

In my opinion, this law is useless and people will just break it. What we need is a solution to the texting while driving problem, like something that reads text messages out loud.

What happened to just talking to that person on the phone? There are hands free devices that keep a driver much safer while talking. Now texting is the new thing.

I don't text, unless its information that hubby needs like a phone number, then I will text it to him, but he doesn't actually get the text till he's parked. He's smart enough to know better.

texting while driving has been proven to be worse than driving with a blood alcohol level .08 (legally drunk)

utah law is now a $750 fine and up to 3 months in jail

but if you have an injury or fatal accident while texting the fine jumps to $10,000 and up to 15 years in jail

people are going to break the laws anyways and do it,but heres a no brainer, how about use some common sense and dont do it at all...The more im on the road the more im seeing fewer ppl with common sense ,sad to say.The ones i feel bad for are the innocent ones who get hurt and suffer a lifetime of pain or the family who looses a loved one and god forbid a innocent child because some moron wants to text to someone what he or she wants for dinner that night, those I DONT feel sorry for and wonder how the hell they sleep at night knowing they caused a wreck and just hurt someone out of it.....
