I am not defending this driver he obviously f'ed up for whatever reason, but you can't logically believe that there is no such thing as an accident. I would say the majority of the time your theory of someone f'ed up would be dead on, but accidents do happen due to uncontrollable mechanical failure, mother nature, etc.... Just my .02 cents.
While having a steer-tire blow-out might not be preventable, being blown over by wind IS.

Insurance accident data shows the highest rate of trucking accidents occur between 4th and 6th year of driving, regardless of age.

Shouldn't we think about passsing regulation of team "watching".

Dispatch the truck as a solo rig. BOTH people remain awake and in the seats while the truck is in motion. For that 3 year period.

Once they get past the 6th year. They can once again drive without a look out. Or until they turn 65, and need retesting every 6 months.

Not true.... I had this argument with our safety guy in February. And I said the same as you. HE said different.

His point, caught on video tape by a State Trooper. One of our drivers traveling less than 35 mph (with an empty) and attempting to get OFF the road. He had been trying to make the next exit.

Another good point he made. They decide what is preventable and what is not. And for him to argue with me about the possibilities, was useless.

I guess it could have went either way, if the Trooper hadn't been there. But we'll never know.

I feel bad for the driver, but he's gonna have to face the music. 10 people dead, ferchrissakes. If it was I, god forbid, who did this I would have to accept whatever punishment was doled out. If it were members of my family who died in that crash, I'd want justice too. It's a terrible tragedy that cannot be corrected. Husbands, wives, sons, daughters have been wiped off the world. Very sad for all.
