Minnesota trucking firm to shut down operations

A 200-employee trucking firm based in Duluth is going out of business.

Monson Trucking is closing by the end of August, according to a report in the Duluth News Tribune.

The trucking company, founded in 1915, serves the Midwest U.S. and south central Canada, according to its Web site.

Dang it, I was hoping to get on with this company after a year of OTR, this was one of their requirements. It's right up by my home town, which would have allowed for me to get home more often. Ain't gonna happen now, but better for this to happen now, then for them to shut down right after I would have joined them. It looks as if I will be with the company I'm with right now, longer than I really planned on. There are a couple more back home, I'll also stay in touch with. Kinda scary to even wanna switch, with the way our economy is going. The larger the company is, they just might be able to make it thru this recession, it is called a recession right now, isn't it???

Hmmm, what kind of trucks did they have? I might have some money by the time they liquidate their equipment.

Ouch !

We haul 90% plus paper mill products. Hope this doesn't reflect the future of the company I work for.

There have been rumblings of this for a few months now. We thought it was going to happen last Feb. Monson was at least partially unionized. This was one of those trucking companies that had been around for almost 100 years, literally starting off with horses and wagons. They ran 53' dry vans and mostly corn binders.

Goodbye to Monson Trucking

When trucking analysts talk about the need to reduce capacity in the industry to bolster rates, revenue and stock value, it's important to remember that "capacity" has a name. In Duluth, Minn., it's Monson Trucking.
[LINK POSTED BY MEMBER] Only Members Can View This Truck Forum Link. is shutting down Aug. 31 after 94 years as a family-owned business employing 200 people in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Its been hauling freight since the horse wagon days, through four generations of Monson family ownership.

Monson is a union company, and its employees recently agreed to a pay cut and reduced health care benefits. About 50 drivers had been laid off in recent months, according to a report in the Duluth News Tribune.

Wow. They recruited at my school a year ago. The reason I didn't go there is you had to drive all the way up there to apply in person. I'd be unemployed now if I had made the trek.
