Inattention led to Oklahoma wreck that killed 10, police say

Inattention led to Oklahoma wreck that killed 10, police say

Quote:
OKLAHOMA CITY — An Oklahoma Highway Patrol report says the inattention of the driver of a tractor-trailer led to a wreck on the Will Rogers Turnpike that killed 10 people.

The OHP issued the 32-page report on Monday, detailing what its investigators determined while looking into the June 26 wreck in far northeastern Oklahoma, about eight miles northeast of Miami in Ottawa County.

The report says troopers spoke with the tractor-trailer's driver, 76-year-old Donald L. Creed of Willard, Mo., at the scene of the accident and that Creed, while still in his vehicle, "asked if he had hit someone."

The investigation also showed no attempt by Creed to brake or take evasive action, no apparent problems with his vehicle's brakes or steering and "strong evidence" the vehicle's cruise control was in use.

76 years old...tough old bird, shoulda quit while he was ahead. Another case of not "knowing when to say when".

Not much info to go on...but it sounds as if he might have been a little....ummm, senile. Their minds begin to wander as they reach that age (MOST of the time)

Sad, but probably true.

I'm thinking this accident will lead to a change of maximum age requirements for the trucking industry. Kinda like the pilots.

He blew right by one of my company's teams... trainer and CDL trainee. Trainer had just told the student to put on his 4-ways and start braking, when this dude flies by them at warp 9, and pulls into the right lane. Next thing they knew, there was debris flying everywhere in front of them.

Its unfortunate... we have a number of older drivers who are the safest guys you'd ever meet. The age limit on pilots was put into place almost 80 years ago when people didn't live as long, and were in worse health in their older years. It took the pilots until a couple of years ago to get that age limit of 60 raised to 65.

I agree with ya on the fact that we are safer as we get older... but only to a point. The fact that we do live longer now is causing us to see more problems develop in later life then before. I don't have a problem with older drivers, as they are by far more respectful and courteous, as well as safer on the whole, but they also have more health problems to boot.

If they do implement some kind of restriction on age, I hope they make it more of a judgement call on an individual basis type thing, instead of what pilots had to go through though.

Well, there goes my dream of driving long enough to pay off all my bills.
I figured with all the pay cuts, slow freight, and limits on my available hours to drive, i would have paid all my bills off by the time I was 87.
