New Jersey’s snow-free vehicle mandate awaits governor’s signature

New Jersey’s snow-free vehicle mandate awaits governor’s signature
Quote:
A bill atop the governor’s desk would get tough with drivers in New Jersey who fail to clear snow and ice off their vehicles. The rule would apply to commercial and non-commercial vehicles.

The decision by New Jersey lawmakers early this summer to overwhelmingly back the legislation angered the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association and countless truck drivers who have long opposed what they say is legislation that sets truckers up to fail.

Disregarding all negative sentiment about the bill, Assembly lawmakers voted unanimously to approve the bill, which would permit police to pull over drivers whose vehicles were not cleared of snow and ice. A few hours later the Senate signed off on changes to the bill on a 35-0 vote. The sweeping approval cleared the way for the bill – S520 – to advance to Gov. Jon Corzine’s desk for his signature.

While I see where they are coming from, it's a ridiculous law that will be impossible for trucks to comply with. How am I going to be able to get ON TOP of my trailer to sweep off snow and ice? And the cop gets to decide whether the snow and ice accumulated while I was sitting or moving? Sounds rather arbitrary.

This is all they have left to think up in New Jersey?

just 1 step closer to making it illegal to drive a truck!
pretty soon they are going to pass enough laws against us that everything we do or dont do is going to cost us money.
I am really starting to hate this industry!

So every truck stop and carrier yard is going to have to figure out how to erect a "scraping gate" to get the accumulated snow off the top of the trailer. This should really turn into a comedy of errors. New Jersey of all places...who'd have thought?

Is the state going to be willing to pay the medical bills and funeral costs of truckers who kill themselves falling off trailers trying to scrape snow?

I am sure that is covered somewhere in the Healthcare Plan...page 1076, paragraph 14, line 38!
