Bill Gates, and his one partner (not Steve Balmer, the other guy) were brilliant programmers on the early computers. They developed some of the early programming languages. They worked for IBM and Apple in the early days, and got paid pretty danged well. And he didn't sell DOS to IBM, he sold licenses to utilize DOS (before he even owned it, talk about ballsy!). IBM agreed because they were convinced the money was to be made in hardware versus software. Nowadays IBM is limited to an ever-dwindling share of the server market, while you find Microsft software in pretty much every computing environment worldwide. Not too shabby for a dropout. I wish I had that kind of drive!

Most likely, a "small business loan" acquired through his local bank,AFTER he proved that his business showed promise of making a profit....

And guess what? It DID!! And, boy-howdy, did it EVER!!

Who later voluntarily went to work for Microsoft.
Point being, he only thought up the name. And bought the program. It was developed in someone else's garage.

American way ?? Yup, find someone with a workable idea. And sell it out from under them....legally of course.

Can either of you imagine. What would have happened if the original writer of DOS had refused to sell?

What color would B.G.'s pants be ? White and green striped ??

If he was in Maricopa county AZ, Joe Arpaio would have him in a pink jumpsuit....

They were not the only ones that looked at it that way.

It also took a long time for them to give it up.

Why would he? He wrote the operating system, originally titled Down and Dirty Disk Operating System long before Gates and Co. approached him, and never used it. It literally sat in a desk drawer for a year or two doing absolutely nothing. He never used it, or attempted to sell it. The only reason Gates knew about it is because the original programmer showed to one of Gates' partners as an idle curiosity. $50K for something I'm not using, and never intend to use or market myself is found money, as far as I'm concerned.

Well, possibly.

I'm not so sure they would have gave you or me $50k back in the 1970s with a plywood box prototype for a computer running some software the bankers could not possibly comprehend. Infact Im certain they would have thrown us out while laughing hysterically and tossed our plywood box on top of us as they slammed the doors.

But in Bill Gates case if may have helped, oh, just a little bit that his....

Hard work, sacrifice....and be related to the bank executives. And you too can be an American success story.

I think I'm going to mosey on over and subscribe to the Rush Limbaugh newsletter and see if some of that million dollar success he keeps saying we all can attain through hard work and discipline can be bestowed upon me. Maybe get some pointers. I'm just not a million or billionaire because I keep goofing off, gotta get down and do some hard work.

That was Steve Jobs (founder of Apple) and the original Altair.
