FMCSA official: Truckers must report chassis issues

FMCSA official: Truckers must report chassis issues
Quote:
A new federal rule aims to hold intermodal equipment providers accountable for the safety and repair of container chassis, but the rule will only be effective if drivers picking up loads at ports hold the equipment providers’ feet to the fire.

That was the message many port truckers heard Saturday, Aug. 8, at the Owner Operators Coalition of Virginia meeting last weekend at Hampton Roads, VA.

OOCVA and OOIDA arranged an address by Jack Van Steenburg, director of the FMCSA Office of Enforcement and Compliance, to discuss the latest federal rule governing intermodal equipment providers, which was issued in December 2008 by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and which took effect June 17 of this year.

I dont haul container chassis' and in fact have a single experience with them. I moved a container out of a dock for a customer in Detroit and tried to park it on a slight grade. I couldnt unhook without chocking the wheels because the container had no brakes... NONE! No brake shoes installed at all! When the truck showed up to get it I mentioned it to the driver and he said most of them don't, but "it doesnt matter, we only use them local."

Think about that the next time you're in a city and have one of the locals blow by you toting a container.

Couple of friends of mine pull containers alot for Roadlink and some other company here in PA. They've told me some stories about how overweight some of those containers are too. So no brakes + overweight = YEEHAAAA.

I've hauled containers for 12 yrs, the horror stories I can would make a 3 page thread by itself. The problem with this FMCSA ruling is that the railroads still don't give a #### and won't do anything about it.

Exactly, The new ruling will not matter at all to the railroads and steamship lines. If you complain they'll just give the load to someone else. The driver is stuck between a rock and a hard place... either take a chance and pull the container/chassis or complain and do nothing. The railroads and steamship lines take advantage of this, because they know if you don't pull it someone else will.

We had alot of containers out of Cleveland roll into a warehouse I worked at. Crappiest trailers I've ever seen. No brakes, barely any lights, even cracks in the frames. And guess what? You can roll from Cleveland all the way to Meadville without ever seeing a scale. Heck, you run late enough, you'll never see a cop! Most of those little towns don't run night shift police forces, it's all on call.
