Illinois uniform speed bill: final hours near for a decision

Illinois uniform speed bill: final hours near for a decision
Quote:
As the clock winds down in Illinois for Gov. Pat Quinn to make a decision on whether to allow a bill to become law that would do away with split speeds, truckers anxiously await his decision.

With a Saturday, Aug. 15, deadline for the governor to decide whether to sign it into law, veto it or let it become law without his signature, the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association is encouraging truckers to call on Quinn to adopt the uniform speed limit legislation.

“If we’ve learned anything from the past, it’s that you can’t take the governor’s approval for granted. Drivers should do everything they can to encourage the governor to let him know this is sound, safe highway policy and he should sign the bill,” OOIDA Executive Vice President Todd Spencer told Land Line.

Maybe the bill stands a chance this time. With gov Blahbo it sure didn't.

It has never stood a chance. No governor has ever expressed interest in raising the limit. George Ryan the republican was also strong against it.

I do not expect anything to happen.

Besides, the state fair is going on and there will be little activity.

Illinois has never had a speed limit over 55 for trucks. The people in Chicago and the government do not feel the trucks can be safely driven at the same speed with other traffic.

They are not smart enough to find where it may be done in other states.

It would probably blow their hummingbird brains to know that it gets done safely in WY and many other states at 75.

Why does it even matter? Everyone runs 70-75 up there anyway. I almost got run over by another truck on the turnpike the other night. Lucky there was another truck behind him to yell at him and wake him up before he hit me. I will not run 55 in Illinois anymore, laws be damned.

Gov. Pat Quinn has signed a new law increasing the speed limit for large trucks on major highways in Illinois outside the six-county Chicago area to 65 m.p.h.
Under the bill signed into law Friday, the increase applies to trucks carrying a gross weight of 8,001 pounds or more on interstates and other highways with at least four lanes and dividing medians.
Within Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will counties, however, the speed limit for such trucks will be 55 m.p.h.
The speed limit for trucks carrying a gross weight of 8,000 pounds or less will also be 65 m.p.h., which also applies on the Illinois State Tollway system outside urban areas.
