Truckers finding tough times

Quote:

Streets and freeways in the Inland Empire are consistently bustling with big rigs hauling goods.

But the number of these vehicles is not an indication of the state of the trucking industry.
Truckers hauling construction materials have seen an 80 percent drop in moved freight, said Valerie Liese, president of the California Trucking Association, which represents about 3,000 companies.
The sluggish economy will likely also mean that about 7,000 to 8,000 truck operators in Riverside and San Bernardino counties will leave the profession by January, Liese said. "It's really tough ... because all the shippers' demands are lower," she said. "If you want to keep your job, you have to lower your prices."

I have to agree. It's the same way with the big companies. They are getting tighter and tighter by the day paying less with fewer and fewer miles and requiring more work. After a year and the major fall I'm ready to let it go and find something else. I can't pay bills and support a family on this joke of a profession. I've been at the company I'm at now for 3 weeks and haven't seen a dime. Government is going to have to bail me out before long with 3 kids to support. I'm close to telling these companies to go find them another sucker to screw over for a year or so until they get wise and do the same.

even though i haven't been in it long as many, i'd say the article is truthful. for the last couple of years, i've been seeing a lesser volume of trucks in the fontana/ontario areas. etiwanda blvd used to be bustling with truck traffic. now it's not so much the case, even on a monday. a person couldn't even park their rig in cowboy burger at the north-east corner of etiwanda & marlay/francis on any given weekday. not even on a weekend. you could get a bobtail in there, but not a tractor-trailer. there's a good amount of spaces available now.

word. i don't even have a family or three kids to feed, and i'm falling flat on my ### with bills alone. i've cut down my showers to several times a week, which is freaking gross. yet, i break even only if i'm lucky.

hopefully my applications with the department of transportation go through. however, i don't think it'll be the case. as of two days ago, i put in applications to work at my old wally world location, a target across the loop, and even mcdonalds. i don't think fast food is beneath me. at least with that, i can go home on a daily basis and get PAID FOR ALL THE WORK DONE.
