Study confirms sleep apnea common among truckers

Study confirms sleep apnea common among truckers, suggests screenings

“Truck drivers with sleep apnea are much more likely to fall asleep at the wheel, and the condition is increasingly common as Americans become more obese,” said the study’s senior author, Stefanos N. Kales, MD, MPH, at Cambridge Health Alliance.

A new study has confirmed previous findings that sleep-disordered breathing is common among truck drivers and suggests that mandating obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) screenings could reduce the risk of truck driver crashes.

The study conducted by the Cambridge Health Alliance links obesity to sleep apnea in commercial truck drivers.
