Driverless trucks and voice-activated pets could be commonplace by 2019

The robot revolution: Driverless trucks and voice-activated pets could be commonplace by 2019

Quote:
The idea of a 42-ton lorry with no one at the wheel looming in your rearview mirror is pretty terrifying.

But we had all better get used to it because driverless juggernauts could be on Britain's motorways within ten years, experts predicted yesterday.

And the trucks look like being the forerunners of a robot revolution.

According to the Royal Academy of Engineering, artificially intelligent robots and computers capable of making life and death decisions will become more and more common in all aspects of life.

The academy wants a public debate about the social, legal and ethical issues raised by the increasing use of 'thinking' machines such as surgeons, soldiers, babysitters, therapists, carers for the old and even sex partners.

Baffles me as to why people still want to invent things that will cause others to lose. Driverless trucks = No jobs.

2019? Give me a break. This stuff is in its infancy. I'd be surprised if we see a driverless vehicle before 2050.

The driver less truck tech. has been out for about 3 years. The driver less big truck follows a truck with a driver in it. They use camera sensors, but there,s alot of bugs in the system. Like snow, trash, etc. blocks the camera and now the truck doesn,t know where to go. The motoring public doesn,t feel safe not having a driver in the seat. I don,t see it happening anytime soon, there,s too much stuff to go wrong, winter conditions, flat tire, air problem, merging traffic, a bad sensor could mean going full speed into stopped traffic not good. There,s operator less trains, but they can,t come up with a driver less truck that works, maybe we should be considered a skilled trade.

Now that'd be something. Pull into the scale with 8 slave trucks following you. DOT would be pissed having to inspect all of them at once if they pulled you in.

Can't wait to see a robot do a pre trip. I'm with Phil, we were all suppose to be flying our cars 10 years ago so they said back in the 1980's.
