Trucking loses another 4,000 jobs

Jobless rate at 9.7 percent; trucking loses another 4,000 jobs

Quote:

Analysts expect businesses will be reluctant to hire until they are convinced the economy is on a firm path to recovery. Many private economists, and the Federal Reserve, expect the unemployment rate to top 10 percent by the end of this year.

WASHINGTON — The unemployment rate jumped almost half a point to 9.7 percent in August, the highest since 1983, reflecting a poor job market that will make it hard for the economy to begin a sustained recovery. Truck transportation lost 4,000 jobs for the month, and has lost 130,600 jobs since August of last year, a drop of 10.4 percent. For-hire trucking currently employs 1.26 million workers.

While the jobless rate rose more than expected, the economy shed a net total of 216,000 jobs, less than July’s revised 276,000 and the fewest monthly losses in a year, according to Labor Department data released Friday. Economists expected the unemployment rate to rise to 9.5 percent from July’s 9.4 percent and job reductions to total 225,000.

Because contrary to popular belief.....Businesses hire or consult experts to track trends....
They hire in advance of new business cycles to meet the demands of their customers and perspective customers....

The other thing is that they may have drivers that they have hung onto that they would like to get rid of because of issues or problems and would rather hire someone else you would not give them the problems they are dealing with now. I am going back to work with the company I had to leave almost 2 years ago and they said they weren't hiring but would give me a truck just as soon as I finished orientation again. It happens alot.

I got hired to my current job with a cable company for two reasons.

1. they're looking to have all calls taken in state.
2. they wanted to be fully staffed so they could fire people...

Just because a particular field is seeing job cuts doesn't mean that field isn't looking to replace bad apples with some good ones.

As any good gardener knows.....you must weed-out the weak scions and allow the strong ones to fruit....

Could be a lot of reasons. Need drivers, high turnover, thought you were cute. Who cares. As long as you are happy with your decision and they with theirs it's a win/win. I hope you love it there and do really well.
