Trucks weighing more than 80,000 pounds are now prohibited from crossing the Interstate 270 bridge over the Mississippi River until further notice. Departments of Transportation offices in Illinois and Missouri announced the weight restriction that took effect Monday, Sept. 8.
I-270 provides an east-west bypass of downtown St. Louis. The restriction is in effect for both directions until further notice.
According to the state DOTs, trucks grossing above legal weight should use U.S. 67 in the north and I-255 in the south to get around the restricted bridge.
The duration of the restriction is unknown according to MoDOT.
Traffic in St. Louis is also coping with a reconstruction project on I-64/U.S. 40. That roadway will be closed until December from I-170 to Kingshighway Boulevard. A portion of I-64 has reopened between Ballas Road and I-170.
A separate project has lanes restricted for night paving on Eastbound I-44 from Williams Creek to Antire Road. Weather permitting, the night paving on I-44 should be complete by Friday, Sept. 11, according to MoDOT.
MoDOT recently ended a lane restriction along I-70 at the Blanchette Bridge 5th Street ramp.
