Truck Fuel Economy Regulation on the Horizon

Truck Fuel Economy Regulation on the Horizon
Quote:
Well-managed fleets focus on fuel efficiency the way a surgeon focuses on the tip of his scalpel. It is, after all, a life-and-death issue: Small gains in miles per gallon or fractional reductions in cost per gallon can make the difference between profit and loss, and are typically gained only through painstaking effort.

So far the challenge has been a private management issue, albeit much discussed among fleets looking for better ways of doing business. But over the course of the next several years it is going to take on a new dimension, as the government works its way toward setting fuel economy standards for medium- and heavy-duty trucks.

The path to fuel economy regs

There are two parallel efforts under way. One is a research program by the National Academy of Sciences. The other is a rulemaking scheduled to begin next year by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Gubbermint pinheads.

Perhaps they can take the cash for clunkers and expand it into largecars. We can trade in our 5.5-6 mpg used trucks for something that (alegedly) gets 7.5 mpg, and all at the taxpayers expense!!!!

I should run this by my non-representing represenative.

Sweet! This means all trucks will only haul 14K in the box so there will be even more big trucks on the road! Now where is that load of ping-pong balls?

I drive company trucks now the same way I drove my trucks. I was able to acheive 7.0 MPG then, but now only 5.7 to 6.4. The mandated pollution controls keep droping the fuel mileage.

I am all for clean air. But with todays technology, fuel mileage and low emissions are not necessarily the same thing.

And next year we have to deal with another set of even stricter emission standards. Engine manufacturers have already said this is going to add anywhere from 6 to 11 thousand to the price of a new truck. Typical Washington, just force something down our throats and then act surprised when they're told how many problems it's causing.

The only way to get through to those nimrods is to wave cash i front of their noses. Democracy my ###.

I agree bud. By the way I left you a post on the yet more changes thread. Can't send you a PM yet, haven't reached 50 posts. Just like the cap and trade bill. Republicans demanded that the bill be read to the public so they would know what was in it. So the sponsor of the bill, Henry Waxman, brought in a speed reader(60 pages a minute) to read it. Tell me that wasn't a poke in our eye from Waxman.
