How Accident Recorders Can Improve Driving

Opinion: How Accident Recorders Can Improve Driving
Quote:
Those familiar with accident event recorders know this technology offers many valuable benefits for transportation operations. AERs, which record both video and audio when a driving incident occurs, can help to improve driver performance, reduce accidents and save lives. The technology also offers other significant, but less publicized, advantages such as decreased expenses and enhanced driver/management relationships.

A recent study funded by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and conducted by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute found AERs reduce risky driving events by as much as 52%. Likewise, AER vendors say figures for overall loss dollars may decrease by an estimated 30% because expenditures for repairs, downtime and workers’ compensation claims are lower.

It’s not surprising that safer drivers have fewer and less severe accidents, resulting in improved claims experience and lower insurance premiums. An improved safety record also could mean additional savings if you are in an insurance program where you assume risk, as in the case of self-insured and captive plans.

I know there are a lot of drivers who would oppose this, but I would be for it. I think the ones who oppose something like this would be the more rebellious types. It would be so nice when the officer shows up and the crazy 4 wheeler driver that cut you off is yelling how you were following too close you could go to the tape. And since I have been back out OTR the last 4 months I have seen a deterioration in drivers driving habits. I think if they knew they're actions were monitored it would cut down on the reckless behavior.

They have AER's on airplanes and that is the safest mode of transportation. I have no problem flying. But I would not get in most of the trucks with these drivers nowadays.

I have something like that on the trucks i drive. It is a black box of sorts. It records everything I do when driving the truck such as engine brake position and whether or not they are on, speed, engine rpm, accelerator position, brake switch. I have gotten use to the fact that everything I do is recorded. If I ever get in a wreck it will either burn me or save me.

I'm all for having your own camera to cover your butt, but the more these devices get used in the business the more the companies will find ways to use them as ways to get rid of you. They will use them as a cost savings device to get rid of drivers that start to work their way up the pay scale and make room for new drivers. Nothing a big company puts on the truck will ever benefit a driver! PERIOD!
