Nearly 6,000 deaths from driver distraction

DOT: Nearly 6,000 deaths from driver distraction

Quote:
WASHINGTON — Opening a government meeting on auto safety, the Obama administration reported Wednesday that nearly 6,000 people were killed and a half-million injured last year in vehicle crashes connected to driver distraction, a striking indication of the dangers of using mobile devices behind the wheel.

The Transportation Department was bringing together experts over two days for what it’s calling a “distracted driving summit” to take a hard look at the highway hazards caused by drivers talking on cell phones or texting from behind the wheel. Secretary Ray LaHood was expected to offer recommendations Thursday that could lead to new restrictions on using the devices while driving.

unfortunately, this will (and already has) lead to more stupid laws to keep stupid people from doing stupid things. or at least that will be the government's position. in reality, it'll just be a way for the govt to keep a tighter reign on its subjects.

Heck here in missouri they already have a law of no texting while driving especially for the teenagers cause they've had quite a few wrecks nd someone that was in the car told the police the driver was texting

Hell, in Missouri everyone thinks they're Dale Earnhardt and drive that way texting or not. More of them seem to know what they're doing though. I saw a girl do a complete spin out for no reason on I-35 once. Not only did she not hit anyone, nobody freaked out and she recovered it and got right back into it. I didn't even have to slow down.
