Third street racer convicted in Virgoe case

Quote:
More than two years after her truck-driving husband was killed by thrill-seeking road racers, an exhausted Debbie Virgoe has begun to grieve.

The jury returned with a guilty verdict Saturday after deliberating for a day and half in the case of Ravi Badhwar, 23, the third and final driver to be found responsible for a crash that killed the Innisfil trucker on June 18, 2007.

“My journey to start healing started at 3 a.m. Sunday morning,” says the widow. “It was scary.”
Although this phase of what has become her life has ended, Virgoe’s days in court are not over. Mississauga’s Badhwar is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 2 for criminal negligence causing death by street racing, and failing to remain at the scene of a fatal accident.

She plans to be in that courtroom – just as she has for every day of every trial, every hearing, every judgment and appeal that has been held for any of the accused college students.

“It was important to me that they remembered there was a guy on that road supporting his family,” she says. “(Truck drivers) have a right to a safe workplace like anyone else.”

Since the trial started earlier this year, and then re-started a couple more times (due to a jury dismissal and a mistrial), she has been working the night shift so she could spend her days in court. The long days, coupled with the stress of events, have likely led to the nasty cold she is currently nursing, she says.

“I don’t have that safety net anymore,” she says of the second household income that died with her husband. “I have me
