| Trucking firm trying to outrun recession Quote: Brian Urrea knows that in order to survive the recession, businesses have to adapt. The owner of Urrea & Sons Trucking in Moorpark has had to lower rates and get more aggressive to find new customers. The company also has branched out from residential work, which has slowed because of the poor economy, and is tackling more public works projects. “During these hard times it’s been a struggle to keep our doors open, but I’ve been out there knocking on doors,” Urrea said. The 24-year-old self-described “go-getter” means that literally. “I went to a lot of places, and of course, doors don’t always open, but I just kept going,” he said. It’s been a bumpy ride for the trucking industry, which has lost nearly 195,000 jobs since January 2007, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Trucking companies have suffered because various industries are transporting fewer goods in response to consumer cutbacks. Some 75 percent to 80 percent of all American goods are moved by trucks, said Lyndon Finney, editor of The Trucker, a national trucking newspaper | http://www.venturacountystar.com/new...ing-to-outrun/ |
